Renville County approves second retention bonus for employees

— Renville County’s Board of Commissioners are providing county employees with a second bonus payment to promote workforce retention.

The commissioners approved an $800 retention payment to employees at their meeting on June 28, according to Lisa Herges, county administrator. Employees working 16 or more hours and remaining with the county through the period July 1 through Dec. 23 will receive the payment.

The county in January approved a $500 retention payment for employees with the county during the first half of the year.

County Administrator Lisa Herges told the commissioners at the June 21 work session that the county’s personnel committee recommended the second retention bonus. She pointed out that the county is a service-focused organization. Employee retention is essential to its role.

Like many area counties, Renville County has experienced an increase in employee turnover in recent years. Commissioner Doug Erickson made note of the turnover in voicing his support for the proposed payment.

Herges said the county can use a portion of its American Recovery Act funds for the retention payments.
